WWE 3 HOURS, TNA LIVE

THE WWE has announced that from the 26th July 2012, every episode of RAW will be a three-hour long show.

     This came on the same day that TNA announced that it would be switching to a live show every week beginning this summer.

     It appears that it is going to be an excellent summer for wrestling in this regard however I can only hope these certain pitfalls will be avoided.

     WWE’s current product is very much watered down, in a typical two hour Monday Night Raw we get quite a lot of re-caps, advertisements and highlights.

     With the announcement of the new NXT themed show, it may be useful to let certain talents get over as there will be more air time, but I believe the way WWE books its shows, it will mainly be supershows filled with Smackdown talent.

     On the other hand, strangely, TNA’s decision to go live has been greeted with anticipation and excitement.

     Fans are eager to see what the talent can do when under the pressure of a live television set, however TNA can be accused of using a lot of plants and canned crowd reactions so it will be interesting to see if Garrett Bischoff is as over as TNA will try to have you believe.

     All in all this is a fascinating summer for professional-wrestling and this presents a lot of challenges for both companies and with ROH gathering steam and the WWE network down the line, it is a pretty exciting time to be a wrestling fan right now.

     Scary fact is that Nitro switched to a three hour show in a bid to save its ratings just as Monday Night Raw switched to live programming, however I do not believe the companies will suffer the same fate.

NXT: The College Years

THE WWE has announced plans to scrap the never-ending season of NXT:Redemption and replace it with a University based show featuring developmental talent.

     The new show will be shot weekly in Full Sail university and will feature talents from NXT and will also attempt to push through FCW’s finest.

     It begins next week with Sheamus Vs Del Rio for the WHC and Kofi Kingston and R-R-Truth vs Epico and Primo,it is expected it will reach higher ratings than NXT which had grown stale for several reasons.

     JR and William Regal are expected to form the commentary team in what is being billed as HHH’s first idea without any ‘McMahon’ fingerprints on it.

     NXT has had mixed success over the past few seasons having introduced a lot of talent such as Wade Barrett, Kaitlynn, AJ and is largely credited as the show in which Michael Cole developed his heel persona in a feud with Daniel Bryan.

     FCW let’s younger talent get television experience before and if they progress to the main rosters of Raw or Smackdown.

     I believe that the University role will help foster new talent and feel like they are getting a proper qualification in their talent, and with JR and Regal on commentary, to impress them would be quite a character reference.

     My only concern with this new programme is that the talents who stand out might possibly be fast-tracked to the main roster of Smackdown and the new NXT show will dip in ratings, now it is unclear how successful the WWE wish it to be.

     Let’s just hope WWE see a long term future for the show and not just one season to push several guys like the original NXT and the Nexus angle.

     Personally we can look forward to seeing the likes of Seth Rollins, Ricky Steamboat and Dean Ambrose being broadcast to a worldwide audience. I have been particularly impressed with Rollins’s work in ROH and in FCW and I predict a big future for him as WWE is in need of some entertaining face characters.

     Though I am sure there will be a few surprises, while FCW has got a vast array of talent let’s not forget the guys who were part of NXT redemption, guys like Derrick Bateman and Percy Watson who are athletic, charismatic and are 100 percent WWE guys.

     I have said this before in terms of CM Punk and Alberto Del Rio, Punk had to work the indies, work ROH and then make his way to WWE eventually, it then took him several years to win the title. If you look at Del Rio’s pathway, it is clear that he was pushed quicker and a sign that WWE would push their “own” creation rather than someone who got over elsewhere.

     This theory could prove to be a hinderance for guys like Dean Ambrose and Rollins, I hope not.

Tyson Kidd , Smackdown Thoughts

ON this week’s episode of Smackdown we got a chance to see one of WWE’s undercard talents. Tyson Kidd was booked in an excellent match with Ted Dibiase right in the middle of well-booked smackdown.

The match itself flowed very well, the only problem was the commentary. It seems that these guys like Barrett, Ryder and Kidd will never merit a decent push if the announcers do not appreciate their technical ability. Tyson Kidd pulled off a lot of decent spots without blowing up, he was able to carry a heavy guy like Dibiase with ease.

Cody Rhodes showed the world in his match with Orton that he is in the main event picture and I do believe that Tyson Kidd will be there in two years or so. Unless he is stupidly released or joins IMPACT, who have a very lucrative system for young high flying superstars.

Can Smackdown be saved?

                         

FRIDAY Night Smackdown has forever lived in the shadow of Monday Night Raw and will continue to do so, however this should not be used as an excuse. I believe there are five things that could be done to improve the ratings and the overall WWE product.

Timing of the broadcast

Friday Night Smackdown just has a certain ring to it, but we all know that the show just felt a lot better whenever it was live a few tuesdays ago. WWE certainly have the revenue and the means to broadcast such a show. They have planned an upcoming live smackdown show in november , but I think they should do it more often and give the talent on the roster a bit more respect.

Heels

There are some great heel characters on smackdown such as Henry, Rhodes and Barrett however they need to stop anything that is and never will get over. A perfect example of this is the Sin Cara Negro story, this is pointless and we could be enjoying better matches between Sin Caras vs Wade Barrett or Daniel Bryan because I do think he will evetually turn heel.

           

Faces

Smackdown lacks babyface characters. If you look to Raw they have guys like Cena, HHH, Punk, Kofi, Bourne and even Santino Marella who are guys to cheer for. On Smackdown there is only really Big Show, Sheamus and Orton ( we never cheer for Sin Cara) I think Smackdown should add another face or two, and start booking them in some decent midcard matches. At least give Justin Gabriel a little push and see what he has to offer

                                      

Theodore Long

I admit, im starting to get bored of this whole skit. Every week he interrupts the show and makes a match and its become very stale and makes no sense that a tiny little man can empower so many guys on the roster. I believe it should be a WWE legend or someone who gets a genuine reaction from the crowd. Bring back Vickie?

New division?

They could rebrand smackdown and give it a new division, sort of like the X Division in TNA. Or just bring back the cruiserweight division as there are several high fliers in smackdown in particular that could use the time to shine.

Should Brock Lesnar’s tattoo be pointed at his chest?

Seppuku.

The Samurai warrior would rather fall on his own sword than suffer defeat by the hand of his mortal enemy. This is something that Brock Lesnar should know being no stranger to Japanese culture.

“I just felt a lot of pressure in my life, like someone had a knife to my throat” was Brock’s explanation for the tattoo. He discusses it in his book, Death Clutch, wrote with Paul Heyman.

The former WWE and UFC Heavyweight champion has swallowed his pride and agreed to work with WWE again to promote the upcoming WWE 12 videogame. Lesnar will be a playable character in the game and features in a video advertisement.

Having recently read his book, there was a strong message coming across that he would never work for McMahon again. Three time WWE champion Lesnar blamed McMahon for the way he was treated during legal proceedings as he tried to negotiate a release and a right to work for NJPW.

Lesnar did not have the best of luck in 2010 as he suffered a heavy defeat to Cain Velasquez at UFC 121. He was then diagnosed with divertuculitis, a life threatening abdominal condition, for which he required surgery and had several inches of his small intestine removed.

It appears that despite book sales and his new DeathClutch clothing line, Lesnar simply needs the money and is willing to burn bridges with Vince McMahon however I believe the Chairman of the WWE board will be quite shrewd with any future investment with Lesnar. Reports appeared online a few months back regarding Lesnar , Dana White and Paul Heyman meeting with WWE contacts at the WWE base in Stanford. A possible Wrestlemania 28 appearance has been touted.

Brock Lesnar’s next UFC bout will be against Alastair Overeem at UFC 141 in Las Vegas on December 30th 2011.

Friday Night Smackdown Review, 9th September 2011. ( Contains Spoilers)

The show opens without HHH for a change. The camera focused on Mark Henry in the ring as he calls a promo explaining the ” Hall of Pain ” and how Randy Orton will soon be inducted . He also says his best years are ahead of him and he will only get better.

Oh Radio…..

Zack Ryder ( The assisant to the general manager of Smackdown) interrupts and hesitantly alerts the World’s Strongest Man that he is enforcing a strict ” no hands on Randy Orton” policy. They have to wait until their wedding night. I mean Night Of Champions.

Henry concedes but angrily asks Ryder who he thinks will win… Ryder tries to leave the ring but Henry keeps holding him through his death stare. This turns into Long Island Iced Z swinging for Henry who replies with a single arm swing which knocks down Zack. Henry drops him with the World’s strongest slam as former Intercontinental Champion Ezequial Jackson’s music hits.

Ezequial Jackson comes down and is quickly destroyed by Henry after the World’s strongest slam.

We cut backstage to a rather disgusting segment featuring Theodore Long. Aksana is there and says she would like to announce the women’s match this week however Teddy replies that it would not be as special if she did it all the time. She replies saying she has better things to do with her mouth. Teddy will have a Long shower tonight …

The next matchup is newly heel Sin Cara vs Heel Tyson Kidd ( who is a great talent) this matchup was an excellent display of entertaining wrestling. Sin Cara’s finisher needs to be slicker though, and I do believe he needs an explosive move he can do out of anywhere…( Like a codebreaker) He hits the senton into lionsault on Kidd for the victory.

Josh Mathews decides to interview Sin Cara and understand why he turned heel. Sin Cara sounds strangely American and suggests he is here to win things and is sick of dossing about with midcard talents.

This interview is then interrupted by Daniel Bryan who is looking for revenge for Sin Cara’s attack last week. Before he gets round to suggesting a match, Sin Cara lays him out… and then puts Daniel Bryan in his OWN finisher. Wow.

The next match is Sheamus vs Wade Barrett which is full of punching and big boots. Wade Barrett really needs a new direction in his career however this match ended as a DQ due to Christian interfering and he tried to take out Sheamus whilst wearing a ridiculously ugly shirt. Wade Barrett tries to help Christian but Sheamus pretty much beats them both as Christian runs away.

The main event of the night is Randy Orton vs Cody Rhodes in a champion vs champion match. Of course the Viper gets the win with an RKO after he ducks under Rhodes’ drop kick from the top turnbuckle.

Mark Henry runs in, attacks a celebratory Orton and lays him out with the world’s strongest slam. He then goes to the outside and grabs a chair and pretty much sits on Orton and taunts him that he could have broken his leg… but would rather wait until Night Of Champions.

A pretty basic / standard night for smackdown. Nothing ventured. Nothing gained.

WWE RAW 5th September Review ( Contains Spoilers)

Apologies to you guys who actually follow this blog. I am sorry to you both. The last month I have been busy with moving out, no internet connection and finally a rather unfortunate few days in hospital… I have also started a new course so I have been busy but I am pleased to announce the HEEL TURN blog is back for good.

Lets kick things off with a quick no-photo recap of monday night raw.

The context of this episode , with it being Labour day in America, the ratings will be low regardless. So this gives WWE abit of a breather as they can hide behind these low ratings and try to push some younger talent whilst resting their big guns for the upcoming payperview.

To start things off CM Punk enters to a great pop in Ohio and announces that he will take on R-Truth tonight. HHH and Nash come out and before we get to that we hear an excellent screamer in the crowd. A lady shouts out wonderful things like ” I THINK YOU SUCK” whenever CM Punk has the microphone.. Minutes later she follows up her claim with ” …..WELLL YOU STILL SUCK!”.

HHH announces that he will still take on Punk at the PPV and also lays out Nash because he was the person who entered HHH’s office and sent a text message from HHH’s ( the Cheif Operating Officer’s) phone which he should have on him at all times? no? HHH then fires Nash, leaves the ring… then Punk follows + gives Nash what can only be described as a NELSON HAA HAA from the simpsons.

“CM PUNK IS A LITTLE BITCH!!!…. GO HOME!!!” shouts the crazy lady from the audience, now that is what I call heat.

After the break we see Nash get into a limousine with John Lauranitis. Ive said it before but Lauranitis sounds like a throat infection and talks like he has one. He also reminds me of Funkhauser from Curb your enthusiasm… They sneak off together and then the first match of the night happens.

Airboom vs Mahal/Khali ( satisfy indian gap in market)

This was a decent match with a few botches from Mahal. Though it was more entertaining and the crowd were behind it more so than say any match with Otunga/Magillacutty in it ( we will get to that later). Kofi ducks as Khali swings at him, and he hits Jinder instead, Kofi then kicks Khali to the outside as Evan lands Airbourne on Jinder for the pinfall.

Beth Phoenix vs Eve Bore-res

This match has so much to offer. Kelly Kelly and Natalya on commentary. A horrible Natalya kissing Michael Cole months after her being offended he called her ” fat ” . It also had a scary botch from the Glamaslam ( and subsequent pinfall) as Eve disregarded all 10 minutes of her FCW training and forgot to extend her arms to take the bump.. Instead she took the bump on her lady lumps! Slobberknockers.

We see the first of many segments involving Alberto Del Rio as he tries to negotiate with characters such as Christian, Wade Barrett and Dolph Ziggler to initate an attack on John Cena to weaken him for the PPV.

R Truth VS CM Punk

Finally. What we have all been waiting to see. R TRUTH WITH A MICROPHONE. SERIOUSLY. The guy is hilarious! Turn him and the Miz face already!! Leaving only Cody Rhodes, Mark Henry and Alberto Del Rio the only heels in the company!

It is a very entertaining match with plenty of spots outside the ring and shows a lot of good R Truth offense. Punk wins after an interruption by the Miz who recieves a drop kick from Punk + is then forced backstage by the ref. Punk hits the GTS and gets the pinfall.

TIME TO PLAY THE GAME.

HHH enters the ring and they begin the dick measuring again. Only this time its serious. HHH challenges Punk to put his WWE contract on the line against him at Night Of Champions. Punk agrees , only if HHH will resign if he loses the match. Its agreed.

Wow.

We then getr a 2 minute promo hyping up Zack Ryder which is about 5 months too late! He has already been lowered to a bumbling idiot as assistant to the general manager of smackdown. He tags with Jerry the King as they fight the world’s worst tag team Otunga and Magillicutty.

Lawler does most of the work and Zack demands to be tagged in to get the pinfall.

We get a great video of Sheamus advertising the Be A Star campaign. Though they have been ” cool ” and changed it to B A STAR…. BA STAR…. BASTAR…. You get the picture.

John Cena makes his way to the ring and references the recap video of Del Rio attacking him on RAW. Swagger, Barrett, Christian and Ziggler run to the ring and start beating him up. Only to be saved by Alex Riley, Morrison and Sheamus! Teddy long makes the shit official.

 MAIN EVENT TIME

Jack Swagger, Dolph Ziggler, Christian, and Wade Barett vs John Cena. Alex Riliey, John Morrison, & Sheamus

Alex Riley and Wade Barrett kick things off…then John Morrison gets eliminated by Jack Swagger ( Morrison is being buried ) Alex Riley then taps out to Swagger’s ankle lock. Sheamus eliminates Barrett with the brogue kick. Christian and Sheamus then brawl outside the ring and both get eliminated due to a double countout. John Cena then defeats both Ziggler and Swagger despite double teaming him. He hits the AA on Ziggler to eliminate him, and then makes Swagger tap out.

Alberto Del Rio then tries to attack Cena only to be fought off as we end the show.

WWE RAW 1st August Review ( Contains Spoilers)

Ok so there has been a lot of backlash and negativity surrounding CM Punk’s somewhat “early” return to monday night Raw last week. As CM Punk said on the  BS report on ESPN, there are always going to be fans who demand something different regardless of what the talent/creative put on the show. This had me very excited for Raw and the show did not dissapoint.

The show opened with CM telling why he returned and then HHH interupts and accuses Punk of being selfish and how he provides the platform for Punk’s ego. Dick measuring aside this was quite a good segment in which a lot of verbal punches were thrown, thankfully there were no actual punches thrown. The segment ends with us having to wait until the end of the show before HHH’s announcement on how to fix the double championship situation.

The first match of the night was a #1 Contender’s Battle Royal: The Bella Twins vs. Beth Phoenix vs Melina vs Eve Torres vs Gail Kim vs Alicia Fox vs. Kaitlyn vs AJ vs Natalya vs Tamina vs Rosa Mendes. This was a horrible match. My new arch-enemy Melina got eliminated first which was the only thing that saved this snoozefest of a match. Beth Phoenix won and we got a pretty awesome heel turn from the Glamazon, as she threw Kelly Kelly into the security wall …the same spot which Rey Mysterio usually gets thrown into.

We get a segment with The Miz and R-Truth which is actually very entertaining. R-Truth’s comical madman gimmick is really working and the crowd were digging it too. That’s the truth. They then defeat former WWE Champion Rey Mysterio + “re-signed” John Morrison ( Though I always thought he was injured and not actually released in storyline. HHH got screwed by Morrison’s contract negotiatiors if so… After the match the Miz holds Morrison in a crucifiction pose as R-Truth baptises him by hitting him with a bottle of water. Very Biblical image.

Vickie and Ziggler come to the ring and are interrupted by Alex Riley who always reminds me of professional golf player Darren Clarke for some reason.

Ziggler loosens his tie and takes off his jacket before rolling out of the ring. Alex Riley is as confused as we are.

On the subject of confusion, the next match is a tag match featuring David + Michael ( The old New New Nexus )… The assistant to the GM of Smackdown ( Zack Ryder ) and Santino with a snake puppet on his arm. The less I speak of this the better, it is a horrible match with the only saving grace being the incessant chants  “WE WANT RYDER”… The Old New New Nexus win after a pretty good tag team manouvre.

The next match is Del Rio vs Evan Bourne which is the main event match of the night. That is right, even I thought it was a mistake when editing this blog.. But yes this was the final match of the night and it was not bad. Del Rio wins with the cross arm breaker but Evan’s selling was top notch. Ricardo Rodriguez got quite a pop too. After the match Del Rio puts another cross arm breaker on Evan but Kofi Kingston makes the save. Del Rio runs out and looks very angry. 

Finally, after 2 hours of hype and constant interview segments with CM Punk, HHH and John Cena… we finally get them into the ring at the end of the show to discuss the direction of the company. HHH is interrupted by John Lauranitis ( which sounds like a throat infection ) funnily enough he talks like he has a throat infection too! Cena does an awesome impression of him. After about 10 minutes of filler HHH finally agrees to give them a match at Summerslam for the UNDISPUTED WWE title. We all seen that coming. The show still has 4 minutes left to run though… something must happen?!?!….

Oh no.

CM Punk and Cena continue to hold their individual belts up whilst the crowd cheers. More dick measuring.

Friday Night Smackdown Review, 29/July ( Contains Spoilers)

I will not be going into detailed results from Smackdown because I am sure you all have seen the show or read the results anyway. Otherwise you would not be reading this!

I just have a few criticisms of the show which I think I should share with you. I have gotten into a habit of not reading the results for shows like Impact and Smackdown because I was always of the impression that if I knew the results, I would not enjoy the shows. So recently I have been avoiding the results and actually made the effort to record the shows and catch up.

( I normally work the nights Impact and Smackdown air in the UK )

However Smackdown recently has been quite terrible. But you already know that. We get the same Orton/Christian feud which has been stretched out far too long. We could have had the whole lawyer/ Orton goes crazy angle wayyy back at capitol punishment. It would have at least made that PPV slightly more memorable…

Anyway my main point is that Smackdown has a lot of new talent and they are never utilised. Guys like Cody Rhodes and Wade Barrett should really be in that main event scene by now.

Zack Ryder as Teddy Long’s assistant should make for entertaining television particularly because Zack seems to be really getting under Long’s skin, there is a good awkward chemistry there which gets some good laughs. My fears in order from small to big….

• Ryder is there to boost the Smackdown ratings.
• He will never have any matches .
• Teddy Long turns into a broski and starts fist pumping as they become best friends next week.

The Michael Cole situation is quite interesting. With King and JR now the main commentators on RAW on a permanent basis, Cole is somewhat an outcast. I know that Vince McMahon is a fan of three voices on commentary but HHH may be somewhat different. Would love if guys like Colt Cabana/Mick Foley were hired to commentate in the near future. I never really like Josh Mathews commentary as he seemingly interupts any of the comical Booker T/Cole moments which are always more interesting than Ezeqial vs Dibiase part II.

Things that do not make sense

• Sheamus turning face. Oh I guess he is gonna be the stereotypical friendly Irish WARRIOR. All about the craic and the pillage.

• The guy booked to wrestle Mark Henry, they could have used ANYONE from FCW in that slot.

• Daniel Bryan fighting back with a submission rather than a dropkick to Barrett’s head as he falls out of the ring holding his mouth.

• Jinder Mahal booking a skybox, it seemed he was the only person to do so. In fact there was no one even in the last 3 rows at the arena.. So this is either WWE being smart by trying to address the fact the show did not sell out.. Or else Mahal booked all the seats individually. Imagine if ticketmaster sales staff were on commission…

• John Morrison getting jobbed. Way to work the momentum after showing us the returning promo last week on Smackdown.

• R-Truth Being interesting.

and FINALLY

What the hell happened to the WWE tag team Championship?? What happened to the NEXUS?!?! So many questions but so little time. It seems that the “NEW” Nexus ( Otunga and Magillishitty) have been reduced to preppy college boys who have lost their leader and subsequently lost their wrestling moves too. They have also lost their old original theme song which sorta gave them some identity, words can not describe how bad the new entrance music is. It is the same with Wade Barrett… They cut out his entrance so we would not have to endure his horrible music.

Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase defeat WWE Intercontinental Champion Ezekiel Jackson.  Stupid  booking from Zack Ryder.
R- Truth beats Orton via DQ. He then takes two RKO’s for his troubles, one through a table which the crowd popped for. Christian was also on the ramp for this one. No Zack Ryder involved.

Conclusion

A very lively show as Josh Mathews claims ” A new era” lets hope they know what they are doing with certain feuds. I am looking forward to Sheamus/Henry, Rhodes/Ezequial ( Not Rhodes vs Dibiase ) , Bryan/ Barrett and Michael Cole vs anyone.
